Operation Big Boy!

About 5 months ago, I wrote a little post called...
Pacifiers, Potties and Big Boy Beds...Oh My! discussing the topics involved in becoming a "big boy". I was really struggling with 3 issues.
1) Big Boy Bed
2) Potty
3) Paci

When is right time to conquer all of these? While I still have no answers about the "right time", we do have a "plan". Now we all know how well my "plans" work out most of the time, so feel free to laugh at me when this all backfires...

"Operation Big Boy" started this past weekend. It was all prompted by our trip to DC last weekend. You see, Meyer has always slept in a pack n play when we travel. Problem is...now we have sister and 2 pack n plays is just plain ridiculous. Meyer has never been "good at" or allowed to for that matter to sleep in our bed, so he ended up sleeping on a pull out couch bed. He did so well that we just decided to pull the trigger and make the switch to his toddler bed when we got home. Hadley has been sleeping through the night for several weeks now, so we at least knew if things went south we wouldn't have 2 kids up at night. Things were looking good right?

Well...kind of good. You see, Mr. Meyer man has been giving us a run for our money lately with his behavior. He's been testing some serious limits with ALL but not limited to the following defiant acts...
(Throwing food, screaming, coloring on the wall, spitting orange juice all over his entire playroom, yelling out in public, "mommy's hurting me!" and this list goes on). Our little "Oscar the Grouch" wears himself ragged with all this nonsense and eventually just crashes!
So why not rock his world and take away his beloved crib? Ha! Just call me crazy!

Meyer has always LOVED his bed, so we were a little concerned that he would be mad at us for changing it.
To our surprise he woke up from his last nap in his crib and was all for setting up his "big boy bed"! Alright...let's do it!

So on 2/16/2013...THIS happened!
...and we had one very excited little boy!
Great! Grand! Wonderful! But how was this going to go come bedtime...and more importantly precious nap time?
Would he be equally excited? Would he climb out a million times? Would he even ever nap again? Just the thought terrifies me. Meyer has always been such a great sleeper and continues to take a glorious 3 hour nap most afternoons. I would go nuts without this!

Ok ok...I know. You all want to know how it went!

See this?

THAT my friends is my soundly sleeping toddler on night #1 with zero problems...ZERO! Bedtime went the same as usual along with the instructions that if he woke up and it was still dark and his nightlight was still blue...to stay put! No getting out of bed without mommy or daddy...because you might get hurt in the dark. We also put a doorknob cover on the inside of his door just in case he failed to follow instructions. So far, this seems to be unnecessary because he is doing awesome!

Nap time? Same story! He lays right down and goes to sleep and patiently waits for us to come up and get him several hours later. Huge relief!

Now I realize it's only been 2 days and I DO NOT want to jinx myself, but I'm pretty confident that we have made the transition. Easy peasy!

So let's review....
1) Big Boy Bed...CHECK!

2) Potty...we have been slowly working on talking about the potty and he has worn underwear several days, but we are nowhere near there. As far as a "plan" on this one? We are going to "attempt" the 3 day method in early March so stay tuned. I'm going into this with very low expectations but maybe he will surprise us!

3) Paci...I shudder at the thought of taking that thing away. No real plan on this one. Just hoping we can conquer it by the time he is 3!

Bottom line. We are on our way to becoming a "big boy" and he's doing GREAT!

  2. I am so glad that the transition to the toddler bed went well. We moved Aubrey this weekend (post coming soon!) and it was horrible!

I am glad we already conquered the paci a few months ago and Aubrey's not ready for potty training yet- she just turned two- but that's coming up quickly too, I suppose!

How did our babies get to be so big?

  3. Great plan---that's the exact order I have done with my first and will do with my second:) And don't worry, I didn't pull paci until age four and my son is fine:) Just do what works for you, no rush!

    Congratulations on step one!

  5. Sounds like it's going great! I wouldn't worry at all about rushing into the other 2 - Asher is 3 and still not very interested in the potty. It frustrates me a little, but I know pushing him won't work, so I'm trying to stay cool. :-)

SO exciting that M loves his new bed and is staying in it. We were worried about that with A, but for no reason!
